About the Founder
Law Ching Bor, courtesy name Zhongyong. Retired principal, Chinese character artist, and calligraphy educator.
He has devoted his life to calligraphy, practicing for over 60 years and teaching for more than 50 years.
Graduated in 1999 with a Master's degree in Calligraphy Education from the Institute of Chinese Calligraphy Culture at Capital Normal University, Beijing.
Creator of the "Law Ching Bor Scientific Calligraphy Teaching Method" (incorporating mechanics, physics, and geometry), founder of the "Chungyung Grid," and pioneer of "Calligraphy Spiritual Practice."
Proficient in all five major calligraphy scripts, he created the unique "Luo Style" many years ago. In recent years, he has pioneered "Mineral Pigment Calligraphy," blending his deep foundation in Chinese calligraphy with variations of ink intensity and color to create abstract artistic expressions while preserving the unique spirit and momentum of calligraphy.
His calligraphy masters include the nationally treasured Dean Ouyang Zhongshi, renowned Hong Kong scholars Professor Huang Weibing and Professor Chen Jinghong. His Chinese painting master is the Lingnan School grandmaster Professor Zhao Shaoang.
Calligraphy Works, Awards & Activities
- 1. In 1995, selected for the 6th National Calligraphy and Seal Carving Exhibition; works collected.
- 2. In 1996, "Clerical Script Thousand Character Classic" selected for the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial; work permanently collected by the Hong Kong Museum of Art.
- 3. In 1999, selected for "A Thousand Works at the Turn of the Century" — the 7th National Calligraphy and Seal Carving Exhibition (running-regular script); works collected.
- 4. In 1999, invited to inscribe a stele on the "China Changde Poetry Wall," a five-li national cultural project. His calligraphy work became a Chinese historical artifact, recorded for posterity.
- 5. In 2016, held "Practicing Calligraphy — Cultivating Virtue: Law Ching Bor Calligraphy Exhibition" at the Hong Kong Central Library (16,000 sq ft). Over a hundred personal works in various scripts and sizes were displayed.
- 6. In 2020, invited by the Hong Kong Education Bureau to write 39 "Chinese Classic Famous Sentences" in different scripts, with calligraphy analyses for each. Published on the Chinese Language Education website for free access by students, teachers, and the public.
- 7. Invited to participate in numerous large-scale calligraphy events in Hong Kong and mainland China.
- 8. Works frequently collected by museums, institutions, organizations, and private collectors.
- 9. From 2021 to 2025, served as doctoral supervisor for Dr. Cen Yishao's PhD research at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong. The project is the world's first to combine calligraphy with technology — "Body Calligraphy" 1.
Calligraphy Teaching Experience
- 1. Served as workshop instructor for the "Calligraphy and Chinese Culture" program at the Hong Kong Education Bureau for 7 years.
- 2. Served as guest lecturer in "Chinese Calligraphy Culture and Calligraphy Learning" at the Department of Chinese, Hong Kong Institute of Education (now EdUHK) for 3 years.
- 3. Served as calligraphy course instructor at the School of Professional Studies, Chinese University of Hong Kong.
- 4. Served as instructor for "Calligraphy Spiritual Practice" courses at China Graduate School of Theology for 3 years.
- 5. Served as instructor for "Calligraphy Spiritual Practice" courses at Alliance Bible Seminary for 7 years.
- 6. Served as calligraphy instructor at the Yuen Long District Arts Co-operative for over 30 years.
