中庸格

The "Chungyung Grid" was created by Principal Law Ching Bor (courtesy name Zhongyong), registered in Hong Kong in 2000, and subsequently registered in Taiwan and mainland China.

The Chungyung Grid features two identical "中" (zhong) characters overlapping within a square grid. Writing within this grid creates uniform, symmetrical, and harmonious visual space. This aligns with natural human visual perception and responds to the "Psychogeometric Theory of Chinese Character Writing." The internal lines are designed according to the "Golden Mean" aesthetic principle and can produce various geometric patterns depending on the script style, also embodying the Chinese philosophical concept of "Zhongyong" (the Doctrine of the Mean). Hence the name "Chungyung Grid."

Traditional Concepts

Chinese characters are square characters. Seal script mostly presents as elongated rectangles; clerical script is mostly flat like a turtle; regular script combines elongated and square forms; running and cursive scripts vary greatly, requiring balance and high coordination.

Over the years, most people have used the traditional "Nine Palace Grid" or "Rice Character Grid" to aid copying. However, these make it difficult to grasp character structure, and different scripts are hard to accommodate. Characters tend to drift from the central axis, resulting in loose forms. For learners, it takes long hours of practice and training to achieve ideal results.

Faithful to Rules, Yet Innovative

The "Chungyung Grid" was established based on Chinese character structure, designed to accommodate the needs of various scripts and model copies. It is a new scientific copying format. Two identical "中" characters overlap to form a central axis, while the inner points of the outer frame implicitly indicate angles and directions, making it easier for learners to grasp character structure, effectively aiding copying and ensuring every stroke is interconnected.

The Chungyung Grid's ever-changing geometric patterns respond to the psychogeometric theory of Chinese character writing. For learners, it produces immediate results in mastering character form, structure, and composition. Training in visual skills — finding balance in slant, straightness in curves, uniform symmetry, and proportional ratios — yields remarkable results, greatly shortening the time needed to learn calligraphy, achieving twice the result with half the effort.
